See the good in yourself.
“Never forget that once upon a time, in an unguarded moment, you recognised yourself as a friend.”
— Elizabeth Gilbert.
THE LOWDOWN
Perhaps the strangest thing in humans is how disappointed we get towards ourselves for not being perfect, for failing, or for coming short, even though these are the very things that make us humans. In a competitive society like ours, shame, guilt and self-criticism are driven by those fears and we tend to focus a bit too much on those thoughts and emotions.
But underneath the loud inner critic there is a quieter reality: we are wired for kindness, connection, fairness, cooperation, empathy and compassion. Research based on animal behaviour, including non-human primates and in very young children show how these qualities are part of our nature, but they can get silenced by the demands of our pressured, hectic lives.
To complement last week’s practice, this week we ask you to turn the lens towards yourself and find (and appreciate) those good qualities in yourself.
WHY IS IT GOOD?
Being able to see the goodness in yourself will help you in many ways:
It will remind you of your own good nature.
You’ll feel compelled to perform acts of kindness, which in turn will give you a happiness boost.
You will feel more in control of the things you can change.
You will recognise kindness in others and feel more connected.
SOME IDEAS
You can appreciate the goodness in yourself by:
Noticing your feelings of compassion when you see another person’s struggle.
Noticing wholesome and positive thoughts.
Realising and giving yourself credit when you do an act of kindness.
Noticing your intention to take action towards something unfair that’s happening.
Noticing the good in others, which is a reflection of your own inner good.
EXTRA BROWNIE POINTS
If the goodness in you makes you feel compelled to act... act!
Enjoy your inner goodness!
