Meditate.
“Meditation means the recognition or the discovery of one’s own true self.”
— Sri Chinmoy.
THE LOWDOWN
Just in the US in 2017, it was found that 14.3% of the adult population meditated regularly, that’s about 46 million people, the equivalent to all the population of Spain.
That’s a lot of people sitting in silence doing nothing.
So what’s the deal? Why is this happening? In the past few decades more and more research has been done on the impact of meditating in our physical and mental health with very positive results. Add to this the fact that this is a secular practice that can be done by people from all faiths or no faith at all. This is brain training and it’s become mainstream.
So, since meditation the central tool in mindfulness practice, we couldn’t let the year end without inviting you to practice it.
WHY IS IT GOOD?
The number of studies about the benefits of meditating is mind blowing. Here we summarise those benefits that have had a bigger impact in our day-to-day:
Reduces stress and anxiety.
Gives you more control and perspective in your life.
Builds up resilience.
Helps making better choices.
Increases life satisfaction.
You become more present in your life.
SOME IDEAS
If you’re new to meditation, we recommend that you join a local group, enrol on a course, try an app with free content to start with, or do it yourself reading one of these books:
Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life - Jon Kabat-Zinn
Mindfulness: An Eight-Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World - Mark Williams
Ideally meditation should be practised on a daily basis in a quiet place, little and often is the key.
If you can’t find the time and/or place, you can also meditate:
While commuting in public transport.
Sitting on a bench on your lunch break.
In the toilet at work (this could potentially become a sensory overwhelming experience).
In the gym after your workout.
Hiding in a cupboard.
