Learn something new.
“I am learning all the time. The tombstone will be my diploma.”
— Eartha Kitt.
THE LOWDOWN
There’s a widespread belief that learning formally ends once the studies finish and up on the wall goes a framed piece of paper with fancy script reading Bachelor of Arts in Accounting or Second Flute or Dolphin Whisperer. That’s it. Job done. We are “it”. But you wouldn’t put your life in the hands of a doctor who got her diploma in 1973 but never learnt a thing since… right?
In the years after hanging that piece of paper, that acquired knowledge should develop, evolve and hopefully grow through exploration and driven by curiosity. But it’s very easy (and all too common) to get stuck in the comfort of familiar knowledge. I knows, ergo I does.
This week we propose that you find something new to learn, maybe you can start small and see how it develops, who knows… you might even find a new career!
WHY IS IT GOOD?
By stimulating neurons, more neural pathways will be created, gaining neurological plasticity, a hedge against future cell loss.
Your brain structure changes: the white matter (myelin) in your brain helps improve performance on a number of tasks. Learning new skills makes the white matter more dense, which can help to slow down the brain ageing process.
Your confidence and self-esteem improves.
You may feel happier: human beings have a natural desire to learn and progress.
With a bit of luck, you may enter a state of flow.
You become more creative: learning new and unrelated skills is the perfect breeding ground for lateral thinking.
Your ability to learn further increases: yep, the brain is a muscle.
You become more interesting and your conversations will improve.
You’ll adapt better to change: learning something requires a shift in perspective and mind-openness, both useful skills to be able to adapt to life changes.
SOME IDEAS
There are countless interesting things to be learnt, but nothing beats the benefits of enrolling in a class where you keep the continuity and meet other people. If you’re too busy for that, you can also:
Learn new, interesting facts, like pigs don’t sweat.
Watch a TED talk.
Learn about The Healing Power of Cat Purrs.
Learn to make your own jewellery.
EXTRA BROWNIE POINTS
Give a go to something you would have never thought of learning.
Enjoy sharpening your brain!
