Start again.
“Starting over requires no explanation to anyone, requires no specific date, requires nothing more than you saying: It’s time.”
— Anna Pereira.
THE LOWDOWN
Do you ever feel that because you’ve stopped doing something, you’ve failed at it? We all feel it, momentarily at least thanks to our inner critic. You know, that impertinent voice that says: You need to get back to the gym, or Look at yourself, gorging on doughnuts again! or You’ll never progress beyond beginner Zulu… But starting over is a sign of strength and endurance, and while that destructive and down-putting speech is never going away (sorry), it doesn’t have to control you, nor to be heard for longer than necessary. In order to do this, the first step is to not be judgemental and bring kindness and compassion towards yourself.
Talking about resilience (the speed at which we recover from adversity), the great meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg explains that “no matter what the circumstances, we are always able to begin again at a new moment.” Understanding that each one of us has this power and the necessary resources already at hand is central to mindfulness.
For this week’s practice we propose that you begin something again.
WHY IS IT GOOD?
Not only will you feel the excitement of the renewal, but you will also:
bring kindness to yourself,
develop resilience,
regain control over the decisions you make and how you choose to use your time,
develop and practice controlling your inner critic,
apply lessons from past mistakes.
