Screen-free day.
“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”
– Groucho Marx.
THE LOWDOWN
About 3 years ago we decided to do something that sounds radical to many: we’d go one full day without looking at a screen. That meant: no smartphone (phone calls are fine, but no messaging!), no computer and no TV. The prospect seemed daunting at first: -But… no WhatsApp? -No. -And no Google maps? -No. -Wait… NO NETFLIX?? -Well done, you got it!
Our habit-junkie brain loves to make a big drama but the truth is once you start, the first thing you feel is liberated, then you begin feeling the rewards of becoming creative by working around obstacles and finding so many new things to do that involve real physical and present activities: crafts, hiking, meeting friends, taking the kids to the zoo, getting lost and ending up in a trailer park… Wouldn’t THAT be a day to remember?
So during this week, we challenge you to plan your very own screen-free day and experience 24 hours of pure, non-virtual, analogue reality.
WHY IS IT GOOD?
Taking a break from your screens will take you back to a time where all you had was your imagination and resourcefulness, skills that we’re losing with our newly acquired legal addictions. By going on a screen strike, you will:
Get into flow: being in the present moment doing something that you enjoy will get you straight into a flow state, which is one of the moments when we find genuine satisfaction.
Get healthier: screens usually involve sitting. Get up and move, it’s good for your body.
Sleep better: studies show that the “blue light” of the screen has an impact on the brain’s production of melatonin, making it more difficult to fall asleep.
Improve and develop social connections: not only you’ll have more opportunities to start a random conversation (which turns out to be a true happiness booster) you’ll have higher quality conversations.
Improve your focus and cognitive abilities: even if you don’t use your phone, just knowing that you have it with you reduces your ability to concentrate.
Regain control and reduce the habit of constantly using your phone.
